Unlock PDF (Remove Password)

Remove the password from a PDF you can already open: enter the known password and download an unlocked copy.

Overview

Removes a password you already know from a PDF you own, producing a copy that opens without it. It also removes owner-password restrictions on printing or copying. It does not crack, guess or bypass unknown passwords: you must type the correct one. The PDF is decrypted in your browser and is not uploaded.

How It Works

Drop a password-protected PDF. The tool reports whether it needs a password to open, carries only permission restrictions, or is not protected at all. Type the password, using Show password if needed, and pick a fallback resolution of 150 or 200 DPI. Click Unlock PDF. A wrong password gives a clear message and nothing else happens. When it succeeds, a note says whether text was preserved or pages were rendered as images, and you can download the copy with -unlocked added to the file name.

Step-by-Step Usage Guide

  1. Drop the password-protected PDF you own.
  2. Type the password you were given or set.
  3. Choose a fallback resolution, 200 DPI for sharper text or 150 DPI for a smaller file.
  4. Click Unlock PDF and read the note about how the copy was made.
  5. Download the unlocked PDF and keep the password-protected original if you still need it.

Technical Specifications & Standards

The password is checked by opening the file with pdf.js, which can decrypt PDFs. pdf-lib, which writes the new file, cannot decrypt, so the tool first tries a lossless route: it removes the encryption dictionary and opens the result without a password. That only produces a readable file when the content was not really encrypted, so the copy is accepted only if its page count matches and the extracted text of the first five pages and the last page matches the password-opened original. When that check passes, text, links and quality are unchanged. When it fails, which is the usual case for files with a real open password, each decrypted page is rendered to a JPEG and placed in a new PDF. That copy looks the same and opens without a password, but its text is not selectable or searchable, and links and form fields are lost. Use this only on documents you have the right to modify, such as your own bank statements or files a sender has given you the password for.

Targeted Use Cases

  • Removing the password from your own bank or payroll statements before filing them.
  • Preparing a protected PDF for the other PDF tools here, which cannot open encrypted files.
  • Lifting print or copy restrictions on a document whose owner has allowed you to do so.
  • Archiving password-protected invoices so they open without typing the password each time.

Notes & Gotchas

  • Only unlock files you own or have permission to modify.
  • Store the unlocked copy somewhere secure, since anyone with the file can now open it.
  • Choose 200 DPI if the pages have small print, in case the image-based fallback is used.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I remove a password from a PDF?

Drop the file, type the password and click Unlock PDF. The tool verifies the password, then saves a copy that opens without one. You need to know the password; it cannot be recovered here.

Can this unlock a PDF if I forgot the password?

No. It does not crack, guess or bypass passwords. Without the correct password the file cannot be decrypted, and the tool simply reports that the password is incorrect.

Why is the text in my unlocked PDF not selectable?

The browser library that writes PDFs cannot decrypt content, so for most encrypted files each page is rendered as an image into a new PDF. The note after unlocking tells you which method was used.

Is my password or PDF sent anywhere?

No. The password is used only in your browser to open the file with pdf.js, and the unlocked copy is created on your device.
