PDF Metadata Editor

View and edit a PDF's title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer and dates, remove the XMP stream so edits show everywhere, or strip all document metadata before sharing.

Overview

Shows and edits the document properties stored inside a PDF: title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer, creation date and modification date. It also reports whether the file carries an XMP metadata stream and any custom entries, and can strip all metadata in one click before you share the file. Editing happens in your browser.

How It Works

Drop a PDF and its current properties fill the form. Edit any field, enter keywords separated by commas, and set the dates with the date and time pickers or the Set modified to now button. Leaving a field empty removes it. Save edited PDF downloads a copy ending in -edited, while Strip all metadata removes every property and the XMP stream and saves a copy ending in -no-metadata. The size before and after is shown.

Step-by-Step Usage Guide

  1. Drop the PDF whose properties you want to see or change.
  2. Edit the title, author, subject and other fields.
  3. Adjust the dates or click Set modified to now.
  4. Click Save edited PDF, or Strip all metadata for a clean copy.

Technical Specifications & Standards

PDF metadata lives in two places. The Info dictionary holds the classic properties, and an optional XMP stream holds the same information as XML; many readers, including Adobe Acrobat, prefer the XMP values when both exist. That is why the tool offers to remove the XMP stream when saving edits, otherwise an old title stored there could keep appearing even after you change it. The title is what browsers show in the tab when the PDF opens, and search engines may use it as the result title, so a clear title is worth setting before you publish a file. Strip all metadata clears every Info entry, including custom keys such as Company or SourceModified that Office and design apps add, and deletes the XMP stream. Metadata is not the only place names can hide: comments, form fields, file attachments and the page content itself are not changed.

Targeted Use Cases

  • Giving a published PDF a proper title so browser tabs and search results read well.
  • Removing an author name and company before sharing a document publicly.
  • Checking which application produced a suspicious PDF.
  • Adding keywords to PDFs in a document library for easier searching.

Notes & Gotchas

  • Keep the XMP removal option on when editing, so your new values are the ones readers show.
  • Set a descriptive title on any PDF you put on a website.
  • Check comments and form fields separately, because they can also contain names.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I change the title of a PDF?

Drop the PDF, type the new title into the Title field and click Save edited PDF. Keep Remove the XMP stream ticked so readers do not show the old title.

How do I remove all metadata from a PDF?

Drop the file and click Strip all metadata. Every document property, custom entries and the XMP stream are removed in the downloaded copy.

Why does my PDF viewer still show the old author?

The viewer is probably reading the XMP stream, which still holds the old value. Save again with Remove the XMP stream ticked.

Does removing metadata change the pages?

No. Only the document properties are changed. Text, images, links and page layout stay exactly the same.
