Overview
A free online word processor that opens and saves Word DOCX files in your browser. Write on real pages with styles, numbered lists, tables, pictures, headers and footers, footnotes, a table of contents and Track Changes. Nothing is uploaded: files are read and written on your device, and drafts autosave to IndexedDB in this browser.
How It Works
Open a DOCX, ODT, RTF, HTML, Markdown or text file, or start from a template such as a letter, resume, report, meeting notes, an APA or MLA essay, or an invoice. The ribbon groups commands the way Word does: Home for fonts, lists and styles, Insert for tables, pictures, links, equations and fields, Layout for page size, margins, orientation, columns and section breaks, References for the table of contents, footnotes and captions, and Review for comments and Track Changes. Save back to DOCX, ODT, PDF, RTF, HTML, Markdown or plain text, or print.
Step-by-Step Usage Guide
- Open a file from the File tab, drop it on the page, or pick a template.
- Type on the page and apply Heading 1 to Heading 6 with Ctrl+Alt+1 to 6 or from the styles gallery.
- Insert a table, picture, footnote or table of contents from the Insert and References tabs.
- Turn on Track Changes in the Review tab so every insertion and deletion is recorded with your name.
- Save as DOCX with Ctrl+S, or choose ODT, PDF, RTF, HTML, Markdown or text from the File tab.
Technical Specifications & Standards
Documents are held as a structured model of sections, paragraphs and runs, not as loose HTML, so exports are built from the same data you edit. The DOCX writer produces styles.xml with basedOn chains, numbering.xml for multilevel lists, one sectPr per section with its own page size, margins, columns and first page or odd and even headers, and tables with gridSpan and vMerge for merged cells and a repeating header row. Track Changes are saved as w:ins and w:del with the author name and a timestamp, so Microsoft Word shows them as revisions you can accept or reject. Comments keep their replies and resolved state through commentsExtended.xml. Footnotes and endnotes become real footnotes.xml and endnotes.xml parts. The PDF export lays out text itself, so words stay selectable and searchable. Pasted HTML passes an allow-list sanitiser before it reaches the page, which strips scripts, event handlers and javascript: links.
Targeted Use Cases
- Edit a DOCX someone emailed you on a computer without Microsoft Word installed.
- Review a contract with Track Changes and comments, then send the DOCX back for the other side to accept or reject.
- Write a school essay from the APA or MLA template with a running head and page numbers.
- Produce a report with a table of contents, captioned tables, footnotes and a landscape section for a wide table.
- Send personalised letters with mail merge from a CSV list of names and addresses.
Notes & Gotchas
- Use Heading styles rather than bold text for titles, so the navigation pane and table of contents pick them up.
- Click Update table in the References tab after editing headings, because the table of contents does not refresh by itself.
- Add alt text to every picture so screen reader users and the exported DOCX describe it.
- Use Print and choose Save as PDF when the text has characters outside Western European languages, because the built-in PDF export uses the standard PDF fonts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my DOCX look the same when I open it in Microsoft Word?
Styles, lists, tables with merged cells, pictures, headers and footers, sections, footnotes, comments and tracked changes are written as native Word parts, so they open as the same features in Word. Layout can still differ slightly because Word and the browser break lines with different font metrics.
Are tracked changes kept when I save?
Yes. Each insertion and deletion is saved as a Word revision with the author name you set in the Review tab and the time of the edit. Word, LibreOffice and this editor all show them as changes to accept or reject.
Is my document uploaded anywhere?
No. Opening, editing and saving all happen in your browser. Autosaved drafts and the recent documents list are stored in IndexedDB on this device and can be cleared with your browser's site data.
Can it open old .doc files from Word 97 to 2003?
Not directly. The binary .doc format needs a full converter. Open the file in Word or LibreOffice, save it as .docx, then open that copy here.
Can I compare two versions of a document?
Yes. Use Compare in the Review tab and pick the other file. The differences appear as tracked changes word by word, so you can step through them and accept or reject each one.
