Overview
Counts words, characters with and without spaces, paragraphs, sentences and pages in Word .docx files, and estimates reading and speaking time. It also lists the headings outline, tables, images, comments and footnotes, shows the title and author, and extracts the plain text. Several files can be counted at once, all inside your browser.
How It Works
Drop one or more .docx files of up to 100 MB each, or click to choose them. Each file is opened as a ZIP archive and its main document XML is read, so counts appear in a table within seconds. Select a file to see its full statistics, the headings outline built from Heading and Title styles, the most used words and the extracted text, which you can copy or save as a .txt file. With two or more files a total row appears and Download CSV exports every count.
Step-by-Step Usage Guide
- Drop one or more .docx files onto the page or click to choose them.
- Read the words, characters, pages and reading time in the files table.
- Select a file to see its full statistics, outline and most used words.
- Copy the plain text or download it as a .txt file if you need it.
- With several files, click Download CSV to export all counts.
Technical Specifications & Standards
A .docx is a ZIP package, and the counter reads it directly with JSZip instead of converting it first. It follows the officeDocument relationship to the main part, walks every paragraph in body text and tables, and joins the w:t text runs while skipping deleted revisions and field codes. Headings are detected from paragraph styles: the style names in styles.xml are checked, so a document created in a German or French copy of Word, whose style ids differ, is still outlined correctly, and paragraphs with an outline level count too. Words are runs of letters and digits, so contractions and hyphenated words count once and each Chinese or Japanese character counts as one word. Reading time uses 238 words per minute and speaking time 130. The page count comes from docProps/app.xml when Word saved one; otherwise it is estimated at 500 words per page and marked with an asterisk. Images are counted where drawings reference a picture, comments from comments.xml and footnotes from footnotes.xml. Old binary .doc files and password-protected documents are recognised and rejected with an explanation.
Targeted Use Cases
- Checking an essay or thesis chapter against a word limit without opening Word.
- Quoting a translation or editing job from the exact word count of each client file.
- Reviewing the heading structure of a long report before it goes to layout.
- Totalling the words in a folder of chapter files for a manuscript submission.
- Pulling the plain text out of a .docx to paste into another tool.
Notes & Gotchas
- Save files as .docx from Word 2007 or later; legacy .doc files are binary and cannot be read here.
- Use Word heading styles in your documents so the outline reflects the real structure.
- Treat estimated page counts as a guide, since real pagination depends on fonts, margins and images.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does this word count differ slightly from Microsoft Word?
Word applies its own rules to symbols, URLs and some punctuation. This counter treats each run of letters and digits as a word and also counts table text, so totals usually match within a few words on ordinary prose.
Are headers, footers and footnotes included in the count?
No. The count covers the main body, including text inside tables. Footnotes are reported as a separate number of footnotes, and page headers and footers are not counted.
How is the page count calculated?
If Word stored a page count in the file properties, that number is shown. Files saved by other tools often lack it, so the page count is estimated at 500 words per page and marked with an asterisk.
Can I count words in several documents at once?
Yes. Drop several .docx files together; each gets a row in the table, a total row sums them, and Download CSV saves every file's counts as a spreadsheet.
Are my documents uploaded?
No. Each file is unzipped and read by JavaScript in this browser tab. Nothing is sent to a server, and closing the tab discards the results.
