PDF to Word (DOCX)

Convert a PDF into an editable Word .docx file in your browser, with headings detected by font size, one section per page, and an exact-layout option that places each page as an image.

Overview

Converts a PDF into an editable Word document in .docx format. Text is read from the PDF's text layer and rebuilt as paragraphs and headings, with each original page in its own Word section of the same size. An exact-layout mode places a picture of every page instead. Conversion runs in your browser, and the file is never uploaded.

How It Works

Drop a PDF of up to 100 MB and choose Editable text, Exact layout or Both. You can limit the conversion to a page range such as 1-3, 5 and turn heading detection on or off. A progress bar tracks each page and Cancel stops the job. The finished file downloads with the original name and a .docx extension, and the result note tells you how many pages had no text at all.

Step-by-Step Usage Guide

  1. Drop the PDF you want to edit in Word.
  2. Pick Editable text, Exact layout or Both.
  3. Enter a page range if you only need part of the document.
  4. Click Convert to Word (.docx) and wait for the progress bar.
  5. Open the downloaded file in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice and check the result.

Technical Specifications & Standards

pdf.js reports text as short runs with a position and font size, not as paragraphs. The converter sorts those runs by their baseline, joins runs that sit within about half a font size of each other into lines, and inserts spaces where the gap between runs is wide enough. Lines become paragraphs until the vertical gap grows past normal line spacing, the font size jumps, a bullet appears or a short line ends a sentence; hyphenated line endings are rejoined. The most common font size is treated as body text, and lines clearly larger become Heading 1, 2 or 3 so the Word navigation pane works. The .docx package is written directly as Office Open XML with jszip, with text escaped for XML and characters XML forbids removed. Exact layout renders each page at 150 DPI as a JPEG and fits it to a margin-free section. Scanned PDFs have no text layer, so Editable mode cannot recover their words without OCR.

Targeted Use Cases

  • Editing a contract or policy that you only received as a PDF.
  • Reusing paragraphs from an old report without retyping them.
  • Keeping a picture-perfect copy of each page next to editable text for reference.
  • Converting a long manual to Word so headings appear in the navigation pane.

Notes & Gotchas

  • Use Both when layout matters, so you can compare the editable text with the original page image.
  • Run OCR first on scanned documents, because pages without a text layer come out empty.
  • Expect multi-column layouts and tables to need some tidying in Word after conversion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my converted Word file empty?

The PDF is probably a scan, which stores each page as a picture with no text layer. Choose Exact layout to keep the look, or run OCR on the file first to create real text that can be edited.

Will the Word file look exactly like the PDF?

Editable text keeps the words, paragraphs, headings and page breaks but not exact positions, columns or fonts. Exact layout looks identical because every page is a picture, but that text cannot be edited.

Does it keep tables from the PDF?

Table cells come through as text lines, not Word tables. For tabular data use PDF to Excel, which rebuilds rows and columns from text positions.

Which apps can open the .docx file?

The file follows the Office Open XML format, so Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer, Pages and most online editors open it without a conversion warning.
