How It Works

Drop a picture or click to choose one; until then a grey placeholder shows the text. Type the top and bottom captions, set the text size as a percentage of the picture, and choose fill and outline colours. ALL CAPS is on by default, matching the classic style. Click Add text box for extra captions, edit each box's text and size, and drag on the preview to move the nearest box. Download meme saves a file named after your picture with -meme added.

Captions are drawn on a canvas the size of your picture, capped at 16 megapixels. The font stack is Impact, then Anton, Arial Black and a bold sans-serif, because Impact ships with Windows and macOS but not every phone. Each caption is wrapped greedily using the canvas's real text measurements, breaking words that are wider than the picture so nothing runs off the edge. If the wrapped text is taller than a third of the picture, the font steps down 2 px at a time until it fits. The outline is drawn with strokeText before the fill, with a line width of one eighth of the font size and round joins, so letters such as M and W do not grow spikes. Extra boxes are stored as fractions of the width and height, which keeps them in the same place at any resolution, and they are centred on their point. The exported file is the full-size canvas, so the meme is as sharp as the original picture.
