Overview
Splits one image into a grid of tiles and downloads them as a ZIP of PNG or JPG files. Use presets such as 1x3 for an Instagram carousel or 3x3 for a profile grid, or set up to 20 rows and 20 columns. Tiles are named by row and column so they sort in order, and a grid overlay shows the cuts before you download.
How It Works
Drop an image and it appears with a dashed grid and numbered tiles drawn over it. Click a preset such as 1x2, 1x3, 2x2, 3x3 or 3x1, or type the number of rows and columns. The panel shows the image size and the approximate size of each tile. Choose PNG for lossless tiles or JPG for smaller files, then click Download tiles as ZIP. Each file is named after your image with r1c1, r1c2 and so on added.
Step-by-Step Usage Guide
- Drop the image you want to split.
- Choose a preset or enter the number of rows and columns.
- Check the grid overlay to see where the cuts fall.
- Pick PNG or JPG and click Download tiles as ZIP.
Technical Specifications & Standards
The image is cut into exactly rows times columns tiles that together cover every pixel, with no gaps or overlaps. When the size does not divide evenly, the spare pixels go to the first rows and columns, so tiles differ by at most one pixel. A 1001 px wide image in 3 columns gives tiles of 334, 334 and 333 px. Each tile is copied from the decoded image with drawImage onto its own canvas, so no resampling takes place and the pixels match the source exactly. PNG tiles are lossless; JPG tiles are encoded at 95 percent quality on white, since JPG has no transparency. The tiles are collected into a ZIP built in the browser. Instagram shows a profile grid newest first, so to rebuild a 3x3 picture you post the last tile, r3c3, first and r1c1 last. A carousel is the reverse: select the tiles in order from r1c1. Very large images are limited only by the browser's canvas memory.
Targeted Use Cases
- Cutting a panorama into a continuous swipeable Instagram carousel.
- Making a 3x3 profile grid image that forms one big picture.
- Splitting a large poster into pages to print on a home printer.
- Slicing an evenly spaced sprite sheet into separate frames.
Notes & Gotchas
- Crop the image to the grid's aspect ratio first so tiles are the shape you need.
- Use 1080 px per tile for Instagram, so a 1x3 carousel image should be 3240 px wide.
- Post profile grid tiles in reverse order, starting from the last tile.
Frequently Asked Questions
What order should I post Instagram grid tiles in?
For a profile grid, post the last tile first, r3c3 for a 3x3 grid, and finish with r1c1, because the newest post appears top left. For a carousel, select the tiles in order from r1c1.
Are the tiles exactly equal?
As close as the pixel count allows. If the width or height does not divide evenly, some tiles are one pixel larger, and together the tiles cover the image exactly with no overlap.
Does splitting reduce quality?
PNG tiles are exact copies of the source pixels. JPG tiles are encoded at 95 percent quality, which is visually very close and much smaller for photos.
Is my image uploaded?
No. The image is cut and zipped in your browser, and the ZIP is saved directly to your device.
