Excel & Spreadsheet Viewer (XLSX, XLS, ODS, CSV)

Open XLSX, XLS, ODS and CSV files in your browser with sheet tabs, a frozen header row, fast scrolling through 100k+ rows, cell search, column stats and export to CSV, JSON, Markdown or HTML.

Overview

Opens Excel workbooks and other spreadsheets directly in your browser, with no Excel or account needed. It reads XLSX, XLSM, XLS, ODS, CSV and TSV files, shows every worksheet as a tab, and keeps scrolling smooth on sheets with a hundred thousand rows. You can search cells, check column statistics and export any sheet, and the file is never uploaded.

How It Works

Drop a spreadsheet of up to 60 MB onto the page or click to choose one. Each worksheet appears as a tab with its row count; the arrow keys move between tabs. The grid keeps the header row frozen at the top and numbers every row. Type in the search box to highlight matching cells, then press Enter or the arrow buttons to jump between matches. Click a column header to see its statistics, and pick CSV, JSON, Markdown or HTML to copy or download the sheet.

Step-by-Step Usage Guide

  1. Drop an XLSX, XLS, ODS or CSV file onto the page, or click to choose one.
  2. Pick a worksheet tab, using the left and right arrow keys if you prefer the keyboard.
  3. Search for a value and step through the highlighted matches.
  4. Click a column header to read its type, totals and most common values.
  5. Choose an export format and copy it or download it as a file.

Technical Specifications & Standards

Workbooks are parsed with SheetJS, which is loaded only when you open a binary spreadsheet, while CSV and TSV go through Papa Parse with delimiter detection. Cells are read as their formatted text, so a date or currency looks the way it did in the file, and the first row is treated as the header. The grid is virtualised: only the rows inside the visible window plus a small overscan are rendered, with spacer rows standing in for the rest, which is why a sheet with a hundred thousand rows still scrolls without lag. Search is a case-insensitive substring match across all cells and stops counting at 10,000 hits. Column statistics classify a column as number, date, boolean, text or mixed and report filled and empty cells, distinct values, the five most common values and, for numbers, minimum, maximum, sum, mean and median. Formulas are shown as their last calculated values; charts, images and cell colours are not displayed. Exports escape pipes for Markdown, HTML entities for tables and quote CSV fields under RFC 4180.

Targeted Use Cases

  • Checking a spreadsheet attachment on a computer that has no Office installed.
  • Converting one worksheet of a workbook into a Markdown table for a README.
  • Finding every row that mentions an order number in a large export.
  • Getting the sum and mean of a numeric column without writing a formula.
  • Turning an ODS file from LibreOffice into JSON for a script.

Notes & Gotchas

  • Format numbers in the original file the way you want them exported, because formatted text is what gets read.
  • Put a single header row at the top of each sheet so column names come through correctly.
  • Use the CSV or JSON export, not the preview, when you need the complete data from a very large sheet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I open an XLSX file without Excel?

Yes. Drop the .xlsx file onto the page and every worksheet opens as a tab in your browser. Nothing is installed and the file stays on your device.

Does it work with large spreadsheets?

Files up to 60 MB are accepted. Only the visible rows are drawn on screen, so sheets with a hundred thousand rows or more remain responsive while scrolling and searching.

Are formulas shown or their results?

The last calculated value saved in the file is shown, which is what Excel displays in the cell. The formula text itself is not shown or recalculated.

Which file formats can it read?

XLSX, XLSM, legacy XLS, OpenDocument ODS, CSV and TSV. Password-protected workbooks cannot be opened and show an error instead.

How do I convert a worksheet to a Markdown table?

Open the file, select the worksheet tab, choose Markdown under Export this sheet, then copy it or download a .md file named after the workbook and sheet.
