Overview
A focused unit converter with four categories: length, weight and mass, temperature, and digital storage. Pick a category, type a value, choose the from and to units, and read the result - with a one-click copy. Factors are exact standard definitions, the page updates as you type, and nothing leaves your browser.
How It Works
Press one of the four category buttons: Length, Weight and Mass, Temperature, or Digital Storage. Enter the value to convert, then pick the source unit and the target unit from the two dropdowns; the lists change with the category. Length offers metres, kilometres, feet, inches and miles. Weight offers kilograms, grams, pounds and ounces. Temperature offers Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin. Digital storage steps from bytes to terabytes. The result line shows the full conversion with five-decimal precision and a Copy Value button beside it.
Step-by-Step Usage Guide
- Choose the category that contains both of your units.
- Type the numeric value to convert.
- Select the from unit and the to unit from the dropdowns.
- Read the result line and press Copy Value if you need the number elsewhere.
Technical Specifications & Standards
Length and weight convert by factor through a base unit - metres and kilograms respectively - using exact definitions: a foot is 0.3048 m by international agreement since 1959, a mile is 1609.344 m, a pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg and an ounce is 0.028349523 kg. Temperature cannot use factors, so the code routes through a Celsius hub: input is normalised to Celsius with the appropriate affine formula, then converted onward, which is the standard way to make nine pairwise conversions from three formulas. Digital storage uses binary multiples - a kilobyte is 1024 bytes, a megabyte 1024 squared - matching how operating systems report file sizes, and deliberately not the SI decimal convention where a kilobyte is 1000 bytes; that difference is about 2.4 percent at the megabyte and worth knowing when comparing against drive labels, which usually use the decimal meaning. Non-temperature results are formatted with up to five decimal places, so tiny factors do not collapse to zero.
Targeted Use Cases
- Converting a height in centimetres to feet and inches for a form.
- Turning a recipe's grams into pounds and ounces on a kitchen scale.
- Checking how many megabytes a file-size limit in bytes represents.
- Reading a US weather report in Fahrenheit when you think in Celsius.
Notes & Gotchas
- Match the category to both units; there is no cross-category conversion by design.
- Remember storage here is binary (1024-based), while drive manufacturers label in decimal (1000-based).
- For temperature, convert via the hub units rather than memorising formulas.
- Use Copy Value rather than retyping long decimals.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the conversion factors exact?
Yes for length and weight: the foot, mile, pound and ounce values are the internationally defined exact figures. Temperature uses exact formulas through a Celsius hub.
Why is a megabyte 1024 kilobytes here?
The storage category uses binary multiples, which is how operating systems report sizes. Drive and SSD labels usually use decimal multiples, so a '1 TB' drive shows as about 931 GB in this convention.
Which temperature units are supported?
Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin. Conversions run through Celsius, so any pair of the three works, with two-decimal precision.
Can I convert between categories, like miles per hour?
No. Each category converts within itself. Compound units such as speed need their components converted separately.
