Typing Speed Test (WPM)

Measure your typing speed in words per minute with accuracy, raw WPM and per-character errors over 15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds, using common words, quotes or code.

Overview

Measures your typing speed in words per minute together with accuracy. Choose a 15, 30, 60 or 120 second test and practise on common English words, everyday sentences or short code snippets. The timer starts on your first key, mistakes are highlighted as you type, and your top score for each mode and length is saved in this browser only.

How It Works

Pick a mode and a duration, click into the typing box and start. Each character in the text above turns green when right and red with a wavy underline when wrong, and a blue underline marks the next character. Time left, net WPM and accuracy update live. When the time runs out, or you finish the text, a summary shows net and raw WPM, correct and wrong characters, correct words and the keys you missed most. Tab then Enter loads new text; Escape restarts the same text.

Step-by-Step Usage Guide

  1. Choose Common words, Sentences or Code as the text.
  2. Select a duration of 15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds.
  3. Click the typing box and start typing; the timer starts on the first key.
  4. Read your net WPM, raw WPM, accuracy and most missed keys when the timer ends.
  5. Press Tab then Enter to try again with new text and beat your record.

Technical Specifications & Standards

Words per minute uses the typing-test convention that a word is five characters, including spaces, so speed does not depend on whether the text has short or long words. Net WPM counts only characters that match the text at their position, divided by five and by the minutes elapsed. Raw WPM counts every character you typed, right or wrong, so the gap between the two shows how much accuracy is costing you. Accuracy is keystroke-based: every new character you type is checked against the expected one, and fixing a mistake with Backspace does not erase the original error, which matches how most typing tutors score. Pasting is blocked so the result reflects typing. Word mode draws 160 words from a list of the 200 most common English words with a seeded random generator and never repeats a word twice in a row. Sentence mode shuffles short original sentences written for this tool, and code mode mixes JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, SQL, CSS and shell lines, where Enter types a new line. Your personal record per mode and duration is kept in localStorage and never leaves the browser.

Targeted Use Cases

  • Checking your WPM before a job application that asks for a typing speed.
  • Warming up for a few minutes before a long writing or coding session.
  • Practising symbols and brackets for programming with the code snippets mode.
  • Tracking progress after switching to a new keyboard or layout.
  • Running a quick typing challenge in a classroom or team meeting.

Notes & Gotchas

  • Aim for 95% accuracy or higher first; net speed rises once corrections stop eating time.
  • Use the 60 second test for a figure you can compare with others, since short tests vary more.
  • Look at the most missed keys and practise those finger reaches separately.
  • Keep your eyes on the text rather than the keyboard, even if you slow down at first.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is WPM calculated?

Correctly typed characters are divided by five to get standard words, then by the minutes elapsed. A 30 second test with 200 correct characters is 40 words in half a minute, so 80 WPM.

What is the difference between WPM and raw WPM?

Net WPM counts only correct characters, while raw WPM counts everything you typed including mistakes. If raw is much higher than net, slowing down slightly to cut errors will raise your score.

What is a good typing speed?

Around 40 WPM is typical for adults who type regularly, 60 to 80 WPM is fast, and professional typists often exceed 90 WPM. Accuracy above 95% matters as much as the speed figure.

Does correcting a mistake restore my accuracy?

No. Accuracy counts every keystroke against the expected character, so a typo still counts after you delete it. The final text can be perfect while accuracy shows the mistakes along the way.

Where is my personal record stored?

In this browser's localStorage, separately for each mode and duration. Nothing is uploaded, and clearing site data or using a private window resets it.
