PowerPoint Text Extractor (PPTX to Text)

Pull slide titles, bullet points, tables and speaker notes out of a .pptx file in slide order, export them as Markdown, plain text or JSON, and download every embedded picture as a ZIP. Runs locally in your browser.

Overview

Extracts the text of a PowerPoint .pptx deck in slide order: titles, bullet points with their indent levels, tables and speaker notes. Export it as Markdown, plain text or JSON, and save the deck's embedded pictures as a ZIP. The presentation is unpacked in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.

How It Works

Drop a .pptx, .ppsx or .potx file of up to 300 MB. Each slide appears as a card with its title, bulleted text, any tables, its speaker notes and thumbnails of its pictures, and the stats show slide, word, notes and image counts. Choose Markdown, Plain text or JSON, and use the toggles to leave out speaker notes or hidden slides. Copy the output, download it, or click Images ZIP to save every picture with its slide number in the file name.

Step-by-Step Usage Guide

  1. Drop a .pptx file onto the page or click to choose one.
  2. Review the slide cards for titles, bullets, tables and notes.
  3. Pick Markdown, Plain text or JSON as the output format.
  4. Switch speaker notes or hidden slides off if you do not want them.
  5. Copy or download the text, and click Images ZIP for the pictures.

Technical Specifications & Standards

A .pptx file is a ZIP of XML parts in the Office Open XML format. The extractor reads ppt/presentation.xml for the slide list and resolves each entry through its relationships file, so slides come out in the order you see them in PowerPoint rather than the order of their file names. On each slide it reads shapes, takes the title from the placeholder typed title or ctrTitle, and keeps the indent level of every paragraph so nested bullets stay nested in Markdown. Slide numbers, dates and footers are skipped. Table cells are read from a:tbl grids and become GFM tables in the Markdown export. Speaker notes live in a separate notesSlide part linked from the slide, and only its body placeholder is used. Pictures are found through the r:embed references in the slide and copied from ppt/media; a picture used on several slides is stored once in the ZIP. Hidden slides are flagged. Legacy binary .ppt files from PowerPoint 97 to 2003 use a different format and are rejected with instructions to resave them as .pptx.

Targeted Use Cases

  • Turning a conference talk into a blog post draft from its slides and speaker notes.
  • Collecting all speaker notes into one script for rehearsal or captioning.
  • Feeding a deck's text into a summarizer or search index as JSON.
  • Recovering the original photos and diagrams that were pasted into a presentation.
  • Checking a deck for leftover hidden slides before sending it to a client.

Notes & Gotchas

  • Use real title placeholders in your slides, because text boxes styled to look like titles are read as body text.
  • Choose Markdown when you want the outline structure kept and JSON when another program will read the result.
  • Turn off hidden slides when exporting text meant for the audience.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I extract speaker notes from PowerPoint?

Drop the .pptx file, keep Include speaker notes switched on and download the plain text or Markdown export. Each slide's notes follow its text, and the slide cards on the page show them in italics.

Can I extract images from a PPTX file?

Yes. Click Images ZIP to download every picture embedded in the deck, named with the slide it first appears on, such as slide-03-image2.png. Formats such as EMF and TIFF are included in the ZIP even though the browser cannot preview them.

Does it work with old .ppt files?

No. Files saved by PowerPoint 97 to 2003 use a binary format that is not a ZIP of XML. Open the file in PowerPoint, Keynote or LibreOffice Impress, save it as .pptx and drop that copy here.

Are text boxes and SmartArt included?

Text in ordinary shapes and text boxes is included after the slide title, in document order. SmartArt and charts store their text in separate parts that are not read, so their labels do not appear.
