URL Slug Generator

Convert titles or phrases to clean, hyphenated, URL-safe slugs for SEO and routing.

Overview

Turns titles and phrases into the lowercase, hyphenated strings URLs are built from — the slug in https://example.com/blog/my-post-title. Paste a headline, produce the URL-safe form, and copy it into a route, a permalink, or a filename.

How It Works

Type or paste the title in the input pane and press kebab-case — that button performs the slug transform: the text is lowercased, every run of characters other than a–z and 0–9 becomes a single hyphen, and hyphens at either end are trimmed. With a mode active, further edits to the input re-convert live. Copy Text places the result on the clipboard.

Step-by-Step Usage Guide

  1. Paste the working title into the input area.
  2. Press kebab-case to produce the URL-safe form.
  3. Read the slug critically — dropped accents or surviving stop words may need a manual touch-up.
  4. Copy the result into your router, CMS permalink field, or file name.

Technical Specifications & Standards

Good slugs are lowercase, use hyphens as word separators because search engines treat them as boundaries, avoid encoded spaces (%20) and underscores, and never change once published. This transform implements the core rules — ASCII letters and digits kept, everything else collapsed into a single hyphen, edges trimmed — and deliberately stops there. It does not transliterate accented characters, remove stop words, enforce a length limit, or guarantee uniqueness; those are editorial decisions, and the notes below explain how to handle each one.

Targeted Use Cases

  • Naming blog post permalinks so they read well in search results and never change after publishing.
  • Generating route segments for React, Next.js, or Express paths from feature names.
  • Producing file names for documentation pages or uploaded assets from human titles.
  • Cleaning up pasted URLs that contain spaces, uppercase letters, or punctuation before sharing them.

Notes & Gotchas

  • There is no Unicode transliteration: the é in Café Latte is dropped, producing caf-latte rather than cafe-latte. If your titles carry accents, normalise the text (NFD, strip combining marks) before pasting.
  • Stop words survive: the-best-and-new-tools keeps every word. Removing them is a style choice — edit by hand before converting if you want shorter slugs.
  • Punctuation becomes hyphens, so 3.14 becomes 3-14 and C++ becomes c — watch version numbers and technology names that contain symbols.
  • Slugs are not made unique. Two posts titled Intro both produce intro; suffix dates or IDs in your CMS so permalinks stay stable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly makes the output URL-safe?

Only ASCII letters, digits, and hyphens remain, with no leading or trailing hyphen and no spaces left to become %20 in an address bar.

Why hyphens rather than underscores?

Search engines treat hyphens as word separators but have historically not treated underscores that way, so my-post-title reads as three words while my_post_title reads as one.

Does it remove words like 'the' and 'of'?

No. Stop-word removal is an editorial preference that varies by publication, so the tool keeps every word you give it.

Where is the URL Slug button?

On this page the slug transform is the kebab-case button — it produces the hyphenated, URL-safe form directly.
